Creating High Quality online PD for PK-12

Session Title: Creating a High Quality Online Professional Development Program for PK-12 Educators Tuesday July 21 2 pm

This was presented by a private company Shultz Institute which does PD for Florida. They provided a good outline to think about as one develops a program. Who are the key players - lots of roles to fill
  • system admins
  • instructional designers
  • subject matter experts
Question must be answered - who is the audience that will attend the PD offered?

Required - Course Creation system - an internal systems to make it all work;
a course request system so that staff can request an online PD course that meets their needs

Questions to be answered;
  • who owns the course
  • is it facilitated
  • who updates the course
  • is it new or existing package that needs updated
Required - Course development system
these must be;
  • aligned with an online course rubric
  • use this to create an empty course shell/template
Use ADDIE model Analyze Design Develop Implement Evaluate

Required - Course  Implementation System
Facilitators be held to a Standard Operating Procedure
  • minimally they must respond to participants within 48 hours
  • report data
  • close course
  • communicate and enforce completion etc..
 IMHO APS needs especially the course creation system to empower teachers to ask for the training they want. I believe we have the Course Development and Course Implementation in place.

Districts Can Easily Create Online Courses

Session Title: Content Creation & Curation: Districts Can Easily Create Online Courses
Presenter:  Spokane Public Schools
"The canned courses are never rigorous enough for our kids." -- Spokane has been developing their own courses for over 8 years.

Initial buy-in for Blackboard was through making it the "one-stop shop" -- posting textbook and electronic resources.  Worked with vendors during curriculum adoption process in order to post materials within Bb. Also posted Program Guides, Professional books, etc

 Systematic approach for building rigorous, standard-aligned online courses that are copied and used across the district. By developing your own online courses in Bb, school districts have the flexibility to support virtual, blended, credit retrieval and student support programs cost effectively using the same online content. Spokane also has a consortium agreement with Blackboard.

Education Week article they were interviewed for: Ed-Tech Leaders Outline Their LMS Needs

I requested a copy of their slides, course maps, and checklists.

During Q&A, Michael from Baltimore PS mentioned they purchased a "Master Course Synchronization Tool" building block which allows ability to push out and pull back content to and from the copied courses.
